Stratham, New Hampshire

Stratham is a town located in Rockingham County, New Hampshire. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 6,355. It is bounded by the Squamscott River. The town is home to a branch of the New Hampshire Community Technical College.

The Sandy Point Discovery Center is located in Stratham. A trail and boardwalk provides access to a variety of habitats including wetlands, salt marsh and mudflats.

Stratham is well-known for its annual Stratham Fair, held every summer and attracting thousands for its annual pageant, midway, food and fireworks over Stratham Hill.

History

Stratham was settled in 1631 and incorporated in 1716. The area, called Winnicutt by the Pennacook Indians, was known as Squamscott Patent or Point of Rocks because of its location between Great Bay and the Squamscott River. The sixth town in the colony to be incorporated, the town was named for Wriothesley Russell, Baron Howland of Streatham, a friend of Massachusetts Royal Governor Samuel Shute, when New Hampshire was still a part of that state.

Each summer the town hosts the Stratham Fair, held at Stratham Hill Park.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 40.1 km2 (15.5 mi2). 39.1 km2 (15.1 mi2) of it is land and 1.0 km2 (0.4 mi2) of it is water. The total area is 2.39% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 6,355 people, 2,306 households, and 1,743 families residing in the town. The population density is 162.4/km2 (420.6/mi2). There are 2,371 housing units at an av ge density of 60.6/km2 (156.9/mi2). The racial makeup of the town is 97.97% White, 0.16% African American, 0.05% Native American, 0.83% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.14% from other races, and 0.85% from two or more races. 0.65% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,306 households out of which 40.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 67.5% are married couples living together, 6.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.4% are non-families. 18.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 4.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The av ge household size is 2.76 and the av ge family size is 3.18.

In the town the population is spread out with 29.1% under the age of 18, 4.2% from 18 to 24, 32.4% from 25 to 44, 25.5% from 45 to 64, and 8.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 94.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.4 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $76,726, and the median income for a family is $81,391. Males have a median income of $53,271 versus $36,759 for females. The per capita income for the town is $33,270. 1.2% of the population and 0.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 1.1% of those under the age of 18 and 1.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
